Equatel Brings Text Messaging Payphones to the Developing World

Phone sharing is a cultural norm for many in India and certain African countries, places where individual ownership is out of the question and network reception is weak. Jan Chipchase has discussed the kiosks that spring up with little more than a mobile phone and a sign with call rates. In hopes of standardizing this shared experience Equatel has created what they call fixed cellular technology. Their payphones take all the functions of a mobile phone (SIM card support, text messaging, saved contacts) and lock them into a certain location for public use. Personal security is an issue in shared phone use as the communication power phones give us is increasingly important for survival. Equatel's solution gives users control of their data and contacts without needing to own any actual hardware. The company narrates how they see their product in everyday use here.
