Gowalla Hides Physical Gifts Using Location-Based Virtual Goods

Untitled-1

Yesterday afternoon Gowalla began their "The 10 and a Half Days Of Christmas" promotional treasure hunt, incorporating a number of giveaways into their location-based platform. Gowalla fans are used to exploring their city, checking in at various locations to trade, drop, and collect virtual goods. Now there is a chance of finding physical prizes. Those lucky enough to come across a 'Gold Gift' will be rewarded with one of 300 t-shirts, 200 $10 iTunes gift cards, or most compelling, 100 limited edition orange iPod Nanos emblazoned with Gowalla's logo.

These Golden Gifts are a sure-fire way to get people both talking and taking to the streets in hopes of finding one. It is a genius stunt which puts smart marketing with the startup's recent $8.4 million in funding, and it appears that Kevin Rose, an investor, approves of Gowalla's "go out and discover the world," mantra.
