Smule x Glee: iPhone App Does Global Mobile Karaoke

Fox's hit show Glee now has its own iPhone and iPad apps. Developed by Smule, the apps connect fans worldwide with what is essentially, social mobile karaoke.

According to The New York Times:

Players familiar with the music rhythm video games Rock Band and Guitar Hero will recognize the format: Lyrics float on screen and hitting a note rewards users with a flashy starburst visualization.

For those who don’t have the pitch-perfect pipes of say, Rachel and Kurt, the application will adjust the pitch of the singers’ voice. In addition, the software will automatically harmonize the singer’s voice, creating an effect that sounds as if three-people are performing together.

Community is strengthened around the television show with Glee clubs, here users can pass recordings around and add their own harmonies. To get a sense of how this is being used, check out the app website where users can listen in on most recent tracks.
