Facebook Makes a Local Play with "Text-To-Like" Window Decals

Expect to see more of Facebook out in the wild; the company has started sending out "text-to-like" window decals to select local businesses.

The company [Museum of Making Music] received both a window decal and an accompanying letter that encourages participating businesses to place the decal “prominently on your window or sales counter, since businesses that promote their Page off-Facebook tend to see a 20% or greater increase in connections.”

This move is similar to what Google did with Favorite Place QR code decals, also sent to local businesses not too long ago. Announcements at Facebook's recent f8 conference, including everywhere-likes and Open Graph, made obvious Facebook's intention to directly compete with Google. However, in this case Facebook may have an advantage. For one, it owns the social graph. Secondly, the company is making use of SMS, a mobile path that is far more dominant than QR codes. We can easily see this taking off, placing Facebook in the location game.

This is just one more way in which local businesses are getting their own social media profiles. And by connecting with them, our own online identities are being shaped according to the places we visit in real life.

I love this insight – “This is just one more way in which local businesses are getting their own social media profiles. And by connecting with them, our own online identities are being shaped according to the places we visit in real life.”

    It is so true!

In case anyone is dying to get their own sticker, I did some experimenting and discovered that anyone can have their customers, fans, etc promote their Facebook page using “text to like” as long as they have a custom URL. Details are here:
